What is a Pap Smear?

A Pap Smear (also called a Pap Test) is a screening procedure used by doctors for detecting cervical cancer in women. It tests for the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix, the opening of the uterus.

Why is it Important?

Since the 1980s, the rate at which women in Ontario develop and die from cervical cancer has rapidly decreased. This is almost entirely due to Pap testing and screening.

What Happens During a Pap Smear?

The test occurs in a healthcare provider’s office by a doctor or nurse practitioner. The procedure takes about 10 to 20 minutes.

Patients lie on a table with their feet up in stirrups. A tool called a speculum is inserted to widen the vaginal wall. This will allow the healthcare provider to see the cervix. A swab will be used to take a sample of cells from the cervix. This sample will then be sent to a lab for analysis.

The procedure does not hurt, but patients may feel a little pinch or pressure.

Patients will be informed about test results once the doctor receives them.

How Often Should I Have a Pap Smear?

How often a pap smear is needed is determined by various factors, including age and risk. You should ask your doctor to determine what is best for you.
